In 1959, people started to negotiate on having the marble lid of what is believed to be the tomb of Jesus Christ removed. And now, National Geographic finally made it possible after 500 years of waiting to see what’s in there. Archaeologist Fredik Hiebert led this restoration project at the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. According to him, there is no assurance that the messiah’s tomb stood precisely in the same spot it stands today since according to the Bible, the tomb of Jesus Christ is nothing but a bedrock. Throughout the years, archeologists have taken turns on preserving the tomb which explains why there is the Edicule or “small house” built around it. Hiebert said that they “looked into the tomb and saw a lot of rubble” which meant that it wasn’t empty despite not seeing any artifacts nor bones. He shared: “The most amazing thing for me was when we removed the first layer of dust and found a second piece of marble. This one was gray, not creamy white like the exterior, and right in the middle of it was a beautifully inscribed cross. We had no idea that was there.”source:youtube
